The Kitchen Stools are an Edinburgh-based contemporary folk band who line up as-
- Hugh Dailly vocals/fiddle/mandolin
- Raymond Simpson vocals/guitar
- Charlie Traylor vocals/guitar
- Hamish Whyte percussion

clockwise: hugh, charlie, hamish, ray
The Stools have a long association with Shore Poets, having filled the music spot many times across the 20 years of the group’s existence both as The Kitchen Stools and as individual performers. In addition, Hugh was treasurer of SP for the first 10 years while Hamish is currently a member of the SP steering group. After too many years playing in the kitchen the Stools ventured out in 2010 to make their first album, Any Given Moment, from which both tracks on the Shore Poets CD are taken. This must be yours
You asked for it
Got your name on it
And it fits like a glove.
This must be yours
I’ve worked at it
Forged in the fire
Constructed from love.
Write me a story
And put my name in it
Put my name in it
To remember me by
So this is for Rorrie
A song not a story
With your name set in it
To remember me by.
Shining light in the darkest night
A gentle touch at the end of the day
A diamond mine in a deep dark ocean
Won’t have it any other way.
This song’s for my best girl
And she took some finding
I don’t need reminding
How it was in the past
This song’s for my best girl
For ties that are binding
And a road that was winding
But we got here at last.
Shining light in the darkest night
A gentle touch at the end of the day
A diamond mine in a deep dark ocean
Won’t have it any other way.
This must be yours
You asked for it
Got your name on it
And it fits like a glove.
This must be yours
I’ve worked at it
Forged in the fire
Constructed from love.

Oh the first time I saw you I knew it was trouble
That the boys in the band would soon play out of tune
But I wanted to dance and with you as my partner
And your footwork was fine as we waltzed round the room.
We don’t need the band
We don’t need no band leader
We don’t need the dance floor
They can turn out the lights
The new moon is shining
The city is sleeping
Can I have the pleasure of the last dance tonight?
I remember one time in the coldest of winters
How we danced and we danced through the dark diamond streets
Now I’m no Fred Astaire and you’re no Ginger Rogers
But our steps they were perfect and we never missed a beat.
Chorus
Wear the red dress for me that reflected the moonlight
The pipers and drummers will beat the retreat
And we’ll dance once again till the whole world is spinning
Once more round the floor till the dance is complete.
Chorus
Oh the military two-step and stripping the willow
And hornpipes and reels are the dancers’ delight
The lady makes choices, the gentleman’s pleasure
Is to stay here and dance with you into the night.
The lady makes choices, this gentleman’s pleasure
Is to stay here and dance with you into the night.
